The service in the Northern Echo

The Northern Echo, which spells the surname Donison, reports that she is from Seaham and is preparing a female-driver-only service, at first across Durham and Sunderland. April 1975 matches the paper's description of her as 51. She was a residential worker in children's services until an accident at work left her unable to continue in that role. In August 2026 she began driving for Uber. She is waiting for an operator's licence before the service launches and before other female drivers are recruited. The work is to start as pre-booked journeys rather than through an app, and an app has not been ruled out later.

"There was something always in the back of my mind that there was a need for more female drivers. When I was driving people, it would happen up to ten times a day where women were getting in the car and saying, 'Oh my God, a woman driver, this is amazing'. I don't want anyone to feel I'm being disrespectful to male drivers. There are thousands of brilliant male drivers who ensure the safety of their passengers, but I just saw a gap in the market and I want to give women the option to have a female driver if they want one. The response has been amazing, absolutely amazing. I just want to give women the choice. If they want a female driver, they'll be able to book one."

The figure of up to ten times a day, and the mention of thousands of male drivers, are her account, not an official count.
