Worcester agrees taxi fare rise proposal amid cost squeeze

Tariff 1 flag £4.30→£5 and Tariff 2 £5.50→£6.40 pending consult; trade cited fuel — later member survey opposed hike.

Worcester City Council agreed a hackney fare rise at the Taxi Association’s request as fuel and running costs climbed — subject to statutory consultation.

BBC News reported Tariff 1 initial hire rising from £4.30 to £5 and Tariff 2 (midnight–7am, Sundays, bank holidays) from £5.50 to £6.40, the first change since 2022. Licensing officer Niall McMenamin cited fuel, licence fees and living costs; chair Cllr Richard Udall warned higher prices could shrink demand. Private hire meters were unaffected. Subsequent reporting showed the association later withdrew support after a member survey (67–2 against), and the council abandoned the increase — so this piece tracks the original proposal stage.
