Wolverhampton checks tyres in Sandwell and Dudley

Officers spoke to drivers about tyre checks. The council has not said how many vehicles were stopped.

Licensing officers from City of Wolverhampton Council were out across Sandwell and Dudley on 14 October. The council's public protection account said they carried out vehicle compliance checks and spoke to drivers about inspecting their tyres. Taxi Point published the post.

The picture with it shows a tyre-tread card outside Sandwell & Dudley station. The card marks 1.6mm as the legal limit. It uses red for 0mm to 1.6mm, yellow for 1.7mm to 3mm and green for 3mm to 8mm. It also says tyres must not be older than ten years.

The council has not said how many vehicles were stopped, whether any failed, or whether anyone was taken off the road.

What Wolverhampton already requires

The licensing policy says every tyre on a licensed vehicle, including the spare, must have been made no more than ten years ago.

The compliance strategy says each team carries a laser reader to check the 1.6mm minimum. It also says that in 2024 the council ran 441 compliance operations across the country and suspended 161 vehicles. Those figures are for the year, not for this patrol.

A separate check at East Midlands Airport on 24 September did come with numbers. The council said 209 private hire vehicles were inspected and 9 were ordered off the road. TaxiFeed reported that operation.
