Oxfordshire dad: SEND pupils missing school over taxi gaps

Archie’s autistic son waited two weeks for a replacement home-to-school taxi after contract change; council cites 99%.

An Oxfordshire father says his autistic son Archie missed most of the new term after home-to-school taxi cover collapsed when a long-standing contract changed.

BBC News reports Richard, of Shipton-under-Wychwood, waited two weeks for a replacement after the previous firm was removed without notice; Archie had used the same driver for four years on an hour-long run and attended only two days this term. He says dozens of families at the school face similar gaps. Supported Travel’s Laura Gaul said more than 99% of on-time applications among 8,000-plus were arranged, contracts follow a fair process, and parental preference/continuity are not scored. Council spend on the service is about £43m a year after a £15m rise over four years. OCC says child welfare remains the priority.
