GMB says taxi standards must increase driver rights

Eamon O'Hearn says any new national standards must also increase driver rights and protections.

GMB Union has answered the government's response to the Transport Select Committee's report on private hire and taxis. The union posted the statement on Wednesday 21 October 2026. GMB Union

TaxiFeed has already reported that response: Ministers stop short of a national wheelchair taxi quota.

National standards

Eamon O'Hearn, GMB national officer, said any new national standards must increase driver rights and protections as well as the standards drivers are expected to meet.

"The Government's response identifies a number of proposals to lift driver standards via updated national standards.

GMB believes any new national standards must also contain increases in driver rights and protections too.

Ministers have committed to engaging unions and other stakeholders in this process and we look forward to bringing our members voices to those discussions."
