A Leicester driver has been jailed for two years after a high-speed crash killed taxi passenger Donna Brighton on her 60th birthday.
Leicester Crown Court heard that on 16 September 2023 on Glenfield Road, Thomas Goulty, 36, drove a Vauxhall Astra at 64mph in a 30mph zone after two lagers and hit Sarwar Mohammad’s Peugeot Expert Tepee taxi. Brighton was thrown through an open window and died at the scene; back-seat passengers Steve and Andrea Sidsaff were seriously hurt. Goulty pleaded guilty to causing death and serious injury by careless driving, was banned for five years with an extended retest. Mohammad, who admitted the same offences, got six months suspended for two years, 100 hours unpaid work and a two-year ban.
