HMRC MTD: don’t treat app payouts as full taxi turnover

£1,000 fares vs £800 banked after commission — digital records must show gross income and costs.

App taxi and PHV drivers preparing for Making Tax Digital need to record gross fares, not only what lands in the bank after platform commission.

trade reporting worked example: £1,000 of passenger fares with £200 commission leaves an £800 payout — recording only £800 as turnover can understate income and miss the matching cost. Multi-app drivers (Uber, Bolt, Freenow plus cash and card) rarely have one statement covering everything; bank lines often lump journeys. MTD requires digital records and quarterly updates; operators’ statements help but do not replace the driver’s own books. TaxNav told trade reporting quarterly filings summarise income and expenses, with underlying digital records supporting the totals.
