GM opens £2m fund for private hire drivers to go greener

Up to £2,500 grants for Euro 4+ petrol, Euro 6 diesel or ZEC swaps; follows support for 400+ black cabs.

Greater Manchester has opened a £2 million Private Hire Vehicle Support Fund to help locally licensed PH drivers switch to cleaner cars.

Air Quality News says applications opened 15 September with grants up to £2,500 for drivers licensed by one of the 10 councils. Eligible replacements include Euro 4+ petrol, Euro 6 diesel and zero-emission-capable vehicles. The scheme grew from trade feedback via “Backing Our Taxis. Local. Licensed. Trusted” and mirrors a December 2025 Hackney Support Fund already committed to more than 400 black-cab drivers. Mayor Bev Craig linked it to air quality and pressing government against out-of-area undercutting. PH and taxis make about 120,000 GM journeys a day.
