Fiji taxi operators are asking the competition commission to hold fares steady for three months rather than cut them from 1 October.
FBC News quotes Fiji Zone Taxi Association acting national secretary Mohammed Shameem saying rising fuel, insurance, maintenance, meter calibration and living costs have already outstripped July’s four-cent increase. Drivers often work 10–12 hours six or seven days a week with little savings; breakdowns can push families into debt and fatigue raises crash risk. The industry is preparing a 2026 cost-based submission and warns a cut could force vehicles off the road.
