The average annual taxi insurance quote for drivers licensed by Doncaster was £5,342 in summer 2026. That is £3,073 more, or 2.4 times as much, as the £2,269 average for drivers licensed by Sheffield. The figures are quotes from insurers, not premiums that were paid.
The two authorities
insurd, a specialist taxi insurance broker, published the comparison from quotes gathered in July, August and September 2026. The page was updated on 3 November 2026. Doncaster and Sheffield each have roughly 500 to 999 quotes behind the average. Doncaster is in the upper third of the 100 most-quoted licensing authorities, and Sheffield in the lower third. Doncaster's figure is the highest average in that table.
The averages follow the licence, not the town where a driver lives or works. Some authorities license large numbers of drivers who live and work elsewhere, so the results are the drivers quoting for each licence. In Lancashire, drivers licensed by Blackburn with Darwen averaged £4,818. That is £2,795 more, or 2.4 times as much, as the £2,023 average for drivers licensed by Hyndburn.
How the figures were reached
The set is more than 100,000 taxi and private hire quotes from insurers on the insurd panel, across 370 licensing authorities. The 100 most-quoted authorities make up 88% of the quotes. Bus and coach quotes are excluded. One authority whose average was more than a third above the next highest was left out, and the next most-quoted authority took its place. Each figure is rounded to the nearest pound.
The five dearest of those 100 averaged £4,929, and the five cheapest £1,519, which is 3.2 times as much. The average across all drivers in the data was £3,189. Drivers with at least four years' no-claims bonus averaged £2,166, about a third, or £1,023, lower, and the gaps between authorities remain among those drivers. Drivers aged 40 to 55 averaged £2,634, and drivers in that age band with at least four years' no-claims bonus averaged £2,109. Those profile averages run across the authorities in the data. They are not Doncaster figures. Drivers licensed by London's Public Carriage Office averaged £4,588, the fifth highest of the 100 and about 44% above the £3,189 average.
An average is not a price and not a guarantee. What a driver is quoted depends on the driver, the vehicle and the cover. The broker has not tried to pin the gap on one cause.
What changes the quote
Craig Shaw, director of insurd, said: "These figures show how much taxi insurance quotes can vary across the UK. Location plays a big part, meaning where you live and where the taxi is kept overnight, but insurers also weigh who is driving, how far they drive and the taxi itself. When quotes can differ this much, comparing a wide panel matters. We work with some of the top-rated insurers, including Admiral, KinetiQ, Q, Inshur, KGM, Eridge, Collingwood, Markerstudy, SEIB, Sabre, Trident and ERS. We search them for each driver, and this summer 8 different insurers on our panel were the cheapest option for at least one driver."
