Dame Joan Collins backs free taxis to the Cenotaph

Dame Joan Collins has backed the London drivers who take veterans to the Cenotaph for nothing on Remembrance Sunday.

Dame Joan Collins has backed Cabs for Veterans, the London licensed taxi drivers who give their time and money so military veterans can attend the Remembrance Sunday service at the Cenotaph in Whitehall. Charity Today published the endorsement on 3 November 2026. Charity Today report

Dame Joan Collins put her support in these words. "Cabs for Veterans is an incredibly heart-warming effort coordinated by independent cabbies across London who give their time and money to ferry veterans on Remembrance Day to the Cenotaph so they can honour their fallen comrades, who gave their lives for the freedoms we enjoy today.

"I support Cabs for Veterans and London Taxis in their efforts and applaud this poignant campaign."

How the free lifts run

The service began in 2009, when a group of London taxi drivers set out to make it easier for veterans to reach the national act of remembrance. It was known as Poppy Cabs. The name has changed. The work has not. On its own site, Cabs for Veterans sets out a turn-up service from mainline terminal stations to Whitehall and back, paid for by the drivers and helpers. Inward journeys run from 08:00 to 10:00. Return journeys run from about 12:00 to 14:00, with drivers setting off from around 12:30 and the highest demand between 13:00 and 14:30. No booking is needed at the hubs. Marshals there see veterans into the taxis. Many drivers wait on Westminster Bridge. A limited pickup is kept for wheelchair users and for people with severe difficulty walking, allocated first come, first served, and only up to midnight on the Wednesday before Remembrance Sunday. The taxis are wheelchair accessible and can take up to six passengers. Cabs for Veterans

Cabs for Veterans is not a registered charity. It works with the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans, formed in 1948, and supporters can give to that charity in the name of Cabs for Veterans.

Why the name changed

The Taxi Charity recorded the reason in July 2026. In 2025 the Royal British Legion challenged the word poppy in the name and in the logo, citing its intellectual property. Discussions with the coordinator, Mike Hughes, did not end in an agreement, and the volunteers took the name Cabs for Veterans. The free Remembrance Sunday transport continues. Taxi Charity account
