Carlisle court: cabbie guilty over £50k cannabis in boot

Muhammad Malik claimed a customer left the bag; judge called story implausible and branded him likely a courier.

A Leicester taxi driver has been convicted after police found five kilos of cannabis worth about £50,000 in his Toyota’s boot on the M6 near Carlisle.

News & Star reports Muhammad Malik, 46, of Helmsley Road, denied knowing the binbag’s contents on 11 December last year, saying an unidentified customer left it and he was on a 600-mile round trip to Scotland to look at cars / other errands. District Judge Philip Holden found him guilty of possession with intent to supply, rejecting the account as “wholly implausible” and saying he was “likely a courier” for organised crime. Sentence: 12-month community order, 120 hours unpaid work, £650 costs and £114 surcharge (12 days already spent in custody).
