Brighton and Hove licensed hackney fares are set to rise after drivers said fuel, insurance and blue-book standards have outpaced tariffs.
Brighton and Hove News reports a cabinet paper recommending higher fares so the city returns from joint 38th toward 14th in national rankings. Proposals keep a £3 start but clock distance every 160 yards (from 176) and waiting every 36 seconds (from 54). Night starts at £4 (9pm–midnight or from 6pm Sundays/holidays); late-night midnight–6am starts at £5, with Christmas/New Year extras. Officers say even after the rise the city would stay in line with Lewes and Worthing. Private hire is not set by the council. Cabinet approval would trigger public consultation before go-live.
