United Cabbies Group rejects a four-mile Knowledge

A four-mile Knowledge of London is not United Cabbies Group policy, and the group calls the claims false.

United Cabbies Group posted a statement on Friday 30 October 2026. It rejects claims that the group supports cutting the Knowledge of London to a four-mile radius, and it was written to answer rumours on social media. Official statement

"To clear up any confusion and directly dispel malicious rumours currently circulating on social media: United Cabbies Group (UCG) has never discussed, proposed, or supported reducing the Knowledge of London radius to 4 miles. This is absolutely not our policy.

"Any claims suggesting otherwise are completely false and fabricated to mislead the trade. While UCG acknowledges that certain efficiencies could improve the Knowledge, we need to be persuaded by any proposals and will NEVER support dropping its world-class standards. Our commitment to protecting the integrity of the Knowledge of London remains absolute.

"We are making our position known publicly to put an end to this matter now, and we will not be making any further comment on this."

The area candidates learn

Transport for London tells candidates that a London taxi can be hailed in the street and asked to go anywhere, so the driver needs a thorough knowledge of the capital. Thousands of streets and landmarks sit inside a six-mile radius of Charing Cross, and the requirement dates from 1865. Learn the Knowledge of London

An All London driver, with a green badge, may ply for hire anywhere in Greater London. The Blue Book lists 320 routes, known as runs, within that six-mile radius. Candidates learn the runs, and the roads and landmarks within a quarter of a mile of the start and end of each one.

The post is a denial. The area published by Transport for London remains a six-mile radius of Charing Cross.
