Taxis and minicabs lose nearly 1km of Oxford Street

Taxis and private hire vehicles cannot enter Oxford Street between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street.

Transport for London says Oxford Street is now free of vehicle traffic between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street. The change took effect on Monday 26 October 2026, on a stretch of nearly one kilometre. Private vehicles, buses, taxis, private hire vehicles, cycles, scooters and pedicabs are not allowed in. The restriction runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Traffic-free Oxford Street

A vehicle that enters the traffic-free section may receive a Penalty Charge Notice. There is no parking inside it. Some taxi ranks, parking bays and Blue Badge bays have been moved to nearby streets, and some of those locations are still being finalised. Taxi services will have access close to Oxford Street.

Closing the road is the first major step. The plan is to raise the carriageway to pavement level, with the first two sections scheduled for spring 2027.

Set-down outside the zone

On the rest of Oxford Street, taxis licensed by TfL may set down and pick up passengers during the hours shown on the signs. They may not stop on yellow lines to wait for a fare, and they cannot stop on a pedestrian crossing or on zigzag markings. Those are exemptions to the yellow lines only. They do not apply inside the traffic-free section. Rules and exemptions

Delivery and servicing vehicles may enter by specified routes between midnight and 7am. A stop for anything other than loading, even in those hours, can bring a Penalty Charge Notice. Fire engines, ambulances and police vehicles may enter at any time.

Crossing roads

The Mayor of London's office says the stretch is permanently traffic-free, that this is the first stage of the programme, and that north-to-south roads across it stay open, including Duke Street, Stratford Place and Davies Street, New Bond Street and Vere Street, and Regent Street. Buses, taxis and other motor traffic are being diverted onto surrounding roads. New bus stops on Wigmore Street, Henrietta Place and Cavendish Place are about 200 metres from the traffic-free area.
