Highgate schoolgirl Melissa Premaratne named after fatal crash

Year 12 pupil, 16, died after being hit by an Addison Lee private-hire car on North Road; driver, 68, bailed.

The Metropolitan Police have named 16-year-old Melissa Premaratne as the pedestrian killed in a collision on North Road, Highgate, on 24 September 2026.

Officers were called at about 08:13–08:15. Melissa, a Year 12 Highgate School pupil, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 68-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and released on bail. BBC reporting says the vehicle belonged to private hire group Addison Lee, which said facts were still being established and it could not comment further.

Her family described her as “a light in our lives.” Highgate School said she was on her way to school and offered condolences. The Met continues to seek witnesses and footage. These are ongoing police allegations; no conviction is stated.
