East Kilbride taxi fares rise on 5 November

The first 880 yards rises by 30p to £4.30. South Lanarkshire Council puts an average two-mile hire at £7.50.

South Lanarkshire Council has approved a new fare tariff for taxis in the East Kilbride zone. The reviewed scale comes into operation on 5 November 2026, after a review under section 17 of the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982. East Kilbride Today report

The new scale

The charge for a hiring of up to 880 yards rises by 30p to £4.30, and an immediate further 20p follows. The next six units of 146.7 yards, or any part of that distance, are 20p each. The next six units of 295.3 yards, or any part, are 30p each. Each further 117.3 yards, or any part, is 10p. On that scale, an average two-mile hire is £7.50.

The charge for a stoppage at the hirer's request is removed. Called but not used rises by 70p to £4.30. Waiting time is 25p for every 60 seconds, or part of that minute, equal to £15 an hour.

A single fare is payable for the exclusive hire of a taxi, or of a private hire car fitted with a meter, whether or not more than one passenger is carried. Nothing is charged for the empty run back from the hirer's destination. A fare calculated by time has to be agreed with the hirer before the hiring.

Extra charges

A hiring that begins between 10pm and 5am may include a surcharge of 80p. A further 40p may be added when the hiring begins between those hours from Friday into Saturday, or from Saturday into Sunday.

Half the normal metered fare may be added from 6am on 24 December until 5am on 27 December, and from 6am on 31 December until midnight on 2 January.

A journey that goes beyond the East Kilbride zone may include a surcharge of one third of the normal metered fare. Where five or more passengers hire a people carrier, any extra charge has to be agreed with the hirer in advance.

The soilage charge is £50 if the vehicle is fouled by sickness caused by alcohol or drugs, by a take-away spillage, or by any other fouling. It is not charged if a child is sick, or if the soiling comes from genuine illness. East Kilbride zone tariff
