Athens taxi driver held over €600 airport-to-hotel shakedown

38-year-old faces robbery after alleged threats for luggage release; second €800 complaint probed.

A 38-year-old Athens taxi driver has been arrested after police say he threatened tourists and forced them to hand over €600 after an airport-to-hotel ride.

Greek City Times / Hellenic Police say the 13 August journey from Athens International Airport ended at a central hotel where the driver allegedly intimidated the family and would not let them leave or collect luggage until they paid — far above the roughly €55 night airport fixed fare. Officers from the Syntagma crime unit identified him via digital evidence, arrested him on 25 August under a warrant and took him to Athens prosecutors on robbery suspicion. A second tourist complaint alleging an €800 attempt is under investigation.
