Liverpool licensing officers stopped a Wolverhampton private hire driver in the city centre in the early hours of 1 March. They suspected he was plying for hire. Liverpool reported him to Wolverhampton, which holds his licence.
Wolverhampton revoked it with immediate effect after a review hearing on 8 October. Liverpool Licensing said so in a social-media statement, which Taxi Point has published. Neither council has named the driver. The statement does not say he has been prosecuted, or what the officers saw him do.
What that means
A private hire driver can only take a job booked through a licensed operator. He cannot pick up someone who hails him in the street or who is waiting on a rank. That rule applies wherever he is working, not only in the city that licensed him.
Liverpool found the suspected breach. Wolverhampton decided the licence. A revocation is a licensing decision, not a conviction, and it is not the same as a ban on his ordinary driving licence. Wolverhampton records revocations on the national register, which other councils check before they grant a licence.
A different Liverpool case
This is not the driver in September’s TaxiFeed report. That case was a test purchase, eight penalty points and a six-month driving ban. This one is the loss of the private hire licence.
