WER2 offers veterans free lifts to Hull Cenotaph

The Walton Street firm will book one free return trip on 8 November for veterans inside the Hull boundary.

WER2 Taxis, of Walton Street, will again give veterans free lifts to Hull Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday, 8 November 2026. Hull Live reported the offer on 20 October. Owner Nick Padgett and a team of volunteer drivers will take anyone inside the Hull boundary who would otherwise struggle to reach the outdoor service. Each booking covers one journey to the Cenotaph and a journey home with the same driver, at a time agreed beforehand. The lifts are subject to availability, and the booking has to be made in advance, quoting "free taxi".

The owner's account

Padgett told Hull Live that the firm has 120 cars in total and that around 30 to 40 of them will provide the lifts. Both figures are his. "It's a really popular scheme and we're usually booked to capacity. Everyone can have one journey to the Cenotaph and a time is agreed to take them home again, with the same driver. This is for those who would otherwise struggle to get there - we know it can be hard to get into town on a Sunday. All the drivers involved in this are volunteers - a lot of them put their hands up and give us two hours for free. I drive myself and my partner drives as well. It's an opportunity to give back to the local community. It's something we've done since I bought the business, four years ago in February. I would encourage anyone to get in touch with us as soon as they can as the lifts are subject to availability."

What is known about the service

Hull Live describes the annual commemoration as co-ordinated by Hull City Council in partnership with the Royal British Legion Hull branch and 150 Regiment. Details of this year's event have not yet been publicised. The usual form, on that account, is a military parade to the Cenotaph, a service with the laying of wreaths, and two minutes' silence at 11am. A civic party takes the salute as veterans' associations, serving Armed Forces, St John Ambulance and the blue light services march past. Road closures in the city centre are usually in place from 6am, before the parade leaves Queen Victoria Square. A smaller Armistice Day service is normally held at the Cenotaph on 11 November. Hull's Remembrance Sunday falls on the same day as the National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph in Whitehall.
