Uber still lacks SA e-hailing registration six months on

NLTA deadline passed; Bolt and Wanatu certified — Uber applied late; drivers may dual-run registered apps.

Uber has been operating in South Africa without the National Public Transport Regulator registration certificate required under the National Land Transport Amendment Act, MyBroadband reports.

E-hailing platforms had 180 days from 12 September 2025 to register; Wanatu and Bolt met the window, with InDrive and Maxim later certified. Uber said it applied “well before” the deadline but filing was dated 17 February 2026, leaving little process time; a Gazette notice of application appeared only on 19 June. Without a platform certificate, drivers cannot get operating licences for that app alone. Some dual-run registered platforms. Transport authorities had not publicly explained enforcement; Uber did not update status by publication.
