Uber drivers sue in Amsterdam over ‘scary’ AI pay algorithm

Collective claim: black-box rates and GDPR breaches; Uber denies personalising offers from accept history.

Uber drivers from the UK, Netherlands and elsewhere have launched a collective claim in Amsterdam alleging the company’s AI pay-setting system is unlawful and drives down earnings.

The Guardian reports Worker Info Exchange and Dutch counsel say an opaque algorithm profiles drivers and personalises rates — citing same-job offers at different prices and lower return-trip bids. Relating to about 241,000 EU/UK drivers, the suit seeks damages and an injunction under GDPR, and claims Uber used data to train AI. Drivers say UK dynamic pay since 2023 cut incomes by about £5,000 a year. Uber rejects the allegations, saying fares use trip data not individual behaviour history, and most fare value still goes to drivers. A Dutch DPA recently fined Uber €825m over automated account deactivations (under appeal).
