Tesla Cybercab turns 10-minute Austin hop into 70-minute slog

No-highway robotaxi loops south around Red Line tracks; rider paid about $20 with no time estimate shown.

An Austin Cybercab rider says a normally 10-minute run from 99 Ranch Market to the Domain stretched to about 70 minutes because Tesla’s robotaxis still avoid highways.

Electrek summarises a Reddit post: the driverless cab swung south through East Austin, paralleling Capital Metro’s Red Line until it could cross on a bridge — riders say the fleet also skips at-grade rail crossings. Fare was about $20; the app shows a price estimate but not a time estimate. Tesla’s surface-street-only software applies to Model Y robotaxis and the wheel-free Cybercab launched to public riders around 3 September amid an NHTSA certification audit. Riders can end a trip early; the episode highlights freeway limits versus Waymo’s highway service.
