South Hams consults on higher hackney carriage fares

Objections due by 22 October; if none arrive, new maximum fares would start 23 October — flagfall up on Tariff 1 and 2.

South Hams District Council has opened the statutory process to raise maximum hackney carriage fares, with objections due by 22 October 2026.

A Section 65 notice dated 24 September says that if no objections are received, the varied table would operate from 23 October. The Moorlander reports Tariff 1 flagfall (7am–8pm Mon–Sat) rising from £3.40 to £3.90 for the first 880 yards, Tariff 2 from £4 to £4.60, plus a new Tariff 4 for Christmas and New Year peaks starting at £7.80. Drivers may charge less; out-of-district hires can be negotiated or metered. Private hire is not covered.

Local titles note fares have not risen since 2022. Objections: licensing@swdevon.gov.uk or Licensing, Follaton House, Plymouth Road, Totnes TQ9 5NE.
