SARS targets Uber and Bolt drivers in South Africa tax push

Finance minister: transactional data to find non-compliant e-hailers; education and enforcement alongside taxi sector.

South Africa’s revenue service has named e-hailing a priority compliance sector, using trip and third-party data to find Uber, Bolt and similar drivers who may be unregistered or non-filing.

MyBroadband quotes Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana telling Parliament SARS is running risk assessments, targeted enforcement and taxpayer education for taxi and e-hailing participants as it broadens the informal-economy tax base. Coverage frames this as compliance, not a brand-new levy — self-employed drivers generally must register and file. Related reporting notes National Land Transport safety rules (panic buttons, tracking) and alleged Uber Go CarScan plate-swaps bypassing vehicle checks.
