Ireland taxi driver licences hit ten-year high of 27,891

NTA: 1,893 new SPSV licences in 2025; WAVs and EVs at record levels; most passengers find taxis easy.

Licensed taxi, hackney and limousine drivers in Ireland have reached a ten-year high, the National Transport Authority says.

Dublin People cites end-2025 figures: 27,891 SPSV drivers, with 1,893 new licences issued in the year. More than three-quarters of surveyed passengers found it easy to get a taxi on their last trip. Wheelchair-accessible vehicles hit a record 4,781 (23% of the SPSV fleet) after 519 WAV grants; electric SPSVs rose 25% to 3,306, with EV drivers reporting about €95 a week in running-cost savings. NTA regulation director Kevin O’Brien said availability and passenger confidence are improving alongside accessibility and EV uptake.
