Ipswich revoked two driver licences after two crashes

One licence went on 27 August after a person was injured. A second went on 29 September for the manner of driving.

On 15 October 2026 Ipswich Borough Council published two officer decisions, each revoking a combined hackney carriage and private hire driver's licence with immediate effect. Neither driver is named. The records give no road, no date for either collision, and no criminal charge.

The Ipswich Star reported the decisions on 20 October, dated the second revocation 29 August, and counted four licences taken away. The officer record for the second revocation is dated 29 September 2026. Two of the four decisions were suspensions, published the same day.

The collision in which a person was injured

OD/26/15 was made on 27 August 2026 by the Head of Public Protection. The holder of a combined hackney carriage and private hire driver's licence was involved in a road traffic collision in which a person was injured. The incident was investigated, and the licence was revoked at once. The chair of the Licensing and Regulatory Committee was consulted, and no alternative options were considered.

The manner of driving

OD/26/19 was made on 29 September 2026 by the Head of Public Protection. A combined hackney carriage and private hire driver was involved in a road traffic collision due to the manner of driving. After investigation, that licence was also revoked at once. The chair was consulted, and no alternative options were considered.

Two certificates not provided

OD/26/14, made on 1 October 2026 and published with the revocations, suspended two further combined licences. The drivers had not provided a medical certificate when due. The suspensions follow the Taxi and Private Hire Licensing Policy 2024-2027, and the reason recorded is the missing certificate. The chair was consulted, and no alternative options were considered.

Immediate decisions, and a year out

The March 2024 hackney carriage and private hire licensing policy allows a suspension or revocation to take effect immediately where the council considers that necessary in the interests of public safety. Where there is a serious risk to the public, the operations manager responsible for licensing, together with the chair, may suspend or revoke a driver's licence at once. These forms name the Head of Public Protection as the decision maker. They do not record a separate finding on risk, and they do not record an appeal.

A driver whose licence has been suspended or revoked may appeal to the magistrates' court, and the policy leaves no other route. After a refusal or a revocation, one year has to pass before a new application will be considered.

A medical certificate is required on the first application, at 45, then every five years until 65, and yearly from then on. The bar is the DVLA Group 2 standard used for lorry and bus drivers. A driver who develops a condition that fails that standard is to have the licence suspended or revoked immediately, with the licence reissued once the standard is met again if the DBS check and the driving licence check are still current. The October suspensions record only that the certificates were not provided when due.
