India’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has ordered ride-hail aggregators to stop showing tip prompts before a trip is accepted or finished.
CNBC-TV18 / India Today report an 11 August 2026 direction citing Clause 14.15 of the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines 2025: tipping must be voluntary, offered only after the ride, and paid in full to the driver with no aggregator cut. MoRTH flagged prompts such as “Advance Tip,” “Improve your chances of quicker ride confirmation” and similar nudges on Uber, Ola, Rapido, inDrive and Namma Yatri. Consumer Affairs had earlier branded advance tipping unethical. Some outlets later said apps were slow to remove prompts — treat full compliance as ordered, not necessarily universal yet.
