Czech cities may set taxi Czech or local-knowledge tests

Chamber of Deputies passed an amendment letting municipalities decree language or area exams; Senate still to decide.

Czech cities and municipalities could require taxi drivers to pass Czech-language or local-knowledge tests under an amendment approved by the Chamber of Deputies on 23 September 2026.

The change, proposed by Prague ANO MPs Patrik Nacher and Robert Králíček and backed by Transport Minister Ivan Bednárik, would let councils set requirements by decree — not a nationwide compulsory test. Language standards would be limited to what is needed to work as a taxi driver. The Interior Ministry would review conflicting local rules. Supporters say quality fell after local-area tests were abolished in July 2020.

The wider Road Traffic Act bill also expands public access to traffic data. The Senate must still consider the legislation before it becomes law. Expats.cz and Prague Daily News covered the same parliamentary vote.
