Coventry City Council has approved higher hackney carriage fares even though some cabbies objected, citing Uber competition.
Starting fares stay at £3.80 day, £4.60 night and £4.90 on public holidays. The initial distance covered by the flagfall shrinks from 0.922km to 0.76km and initial waiting time from 4.5 to 3.7 minutes, so increments kick in sooner. Unite Coventry Taxi Branch chair Major Gill, who sought the rise, put the typical extra at about 30p a job. Cllr Patricia Hetherton called it a reasonable adjustment. Meters are due to be programmed from the week starting 28 September 2026.
Objectors argued raising the tariff in the current climate could push more work to apps. Private hire is unaffected.
