At least 21 dead in Western Cape crash involving minibus taxis

Head-on on N1 between Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka; third vehicle hit wreck — toll may still rise.

At least 21 people died after a multi-vehicle crash involving minibus taxis on South Africa’s N1 in the Western Cape.

The Mirror / Road Traffic Management Corporation report a late Sunday smash about 11.30pm between Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka, roughly 380km east of Cape Town. Authorities say two minibus taxis collided head-on before a third vehicle hit them. Three casualties were declared dead on arrival at hospital; others were injured. Images showed debris across the carriageway. Minibus taxis are a primary public-transport mode and frequently appear in fatal crash statistics. An investigation continues; the death toll may change.
